The New ‘Green Light District’ Shopping Destination in New Orleans

Written by Urban Sherp on October 6th, 2010

Spearheaded by green eco-lifestyle boutique, Green Serene, several local retailers have joined together to rebrand the 2000 and 2100 blocks of Magazine Street as the ‘Green Light District’ of New Orleans. featuring eco-friendly businesses in the area. Magazine Street, is a vibrant area known for its independent boutiques and restaurants, and perhaps now will now be known as a destination for the eco-conscious consumer. On the 2 block stretch, you’ll find Spruce Eco-Studio, a high-end home décor store, Green Serene, an eco-lifestyle shop featuring clothing made from sustainable and organic materials, Branch Out, dedicated to affordable, sustainable and vintage fashions, Zuka Baby, a ‘natural parenting boutique’ filled with all sorts of eco-baby gear and two hand-crafted jewelry boutiques, Gogo and Myers & White.

Their collective goals include “promoting an eco-conscious lifestyle, educating our clientele and community about sustainable options and fostering the development of green businesses.” Nice to see more and more green merchants make their way to New Orleans, but green is no stranger to New Orleans, well known for its antique stores and vintage jewelry boutiques located throughout downtown New Orleans and strung along Magazine street. There is even something for the mid-century modern design fan, Neophobia, filled with retro furniture, lighting, barware, wall art and sculpture.

You left out my good friends Heather and Mark’s shop at 2038 Magazine Street: Unique Products:

They’ve occupied the UPstairs space at that location for the past 10 years and they just moved downstairs last year. They do AMAZING recycled art, including a lot of really cool lighting installations and stuff with old Mardi Gras beads. They’ve been keeping it green on that block since long before most of these new shops existed. I do love all of the other shops in the Green Light District too, but wanted to make sure you knew about the cool stuff at Unique Products!
