Timberland’s Earthkeeper Sandals

Monday, June 14th, 2010

Who: Timberland – Stratham, NH

What: Earthkeepers Kennebunk Thong

Where: Amazon – $67.90

Why We Love It: This laid back thong takes us back to those magical days of summer spent on the coast of Vactionland (just south of Kennebunk). The thong is east coast staple that never goes out of style – like the pair mom used to have that we coveted, constantly slipping our sandy toes into them, willing them to fit to no avail. But now this timeless summer classic fits just right and it got a whole lot greener.

As with all Timberland shoes, these sandals are built to last, but as a member of Timberland’s Earthkeepers Collection, they are built with the earth in mind. Using more eco-friendly materials like recycled tires and organic cotton and considering the entire lifecycle of a product Timberland strives to create a more earth conscious shoe.  The latest in the Earthkeepers achievements is Earthkeepers 2.0 – shoes that are designed to be taken apart when you’re done with them so their parts can be recycled to make new footwear.

The leather for the Kennebunk Thong is sourced from a Leather Working Group (LWG) Silver-rated tannery awarded for its reduced energy use, reduced waste and quality water treatment. The ring is made of organic raffia and the outsole contains 42% recycled rubber from scrap tires.

Available in Dark Brown, Black or Tan.

Stella McCartney for GapKids

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

stella_for_gap

I was excited when I first learned that Stella McCartney and Gap were teaming up for a GapKids collection, especially when I caught wind that several of the pieces would be made of organic cotton. Although, sadly, that does not appear to be the case… The collection has some edgy pieces like the tapered pleated pants, bloomer shorts (super cute!) and skinny jeans mixed with muted basics. The Band Jacket (top left pic) clearly inspired by her friend Chris Martin’s Coldplay Viva la Vida tour has, not surprisingly, already sold out. I mean, the collection did go on sale on the 30th… Click to continue »

Stewart + Brown Adds Denim to the Mix

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

stewartbrownjeansVery excited about this news from WWD — Stewart + Brown will be adding denim to their collection of eco-friendly tops, sweaters, skirts, dresses and jackets. So we can look forward to well tailored and refined eco-conscious jeans made of 100 percent organic cotton.

In describing the new line, designer Karen Stewart said that “we took styling cues from [traditional] denim, but it has a more refined and sophisticated appearance. We wanted to take it a little more dressed up rather than the casual perspective on denim.”

Summer Dresses for the Littlest Eco-Fashionistas

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

sarah_waldo_ella_dressWho: Sarah Waldo; Providence, RI

What: Ella Dress in Lemonade, Peashoot or Petal

Where: Urth Organics; $135.99 w/ free shipping on orders over $75 &  10% off through July 31st w/code “kiwi0709,”  5% off through August 3rd w/code “SummerBreakTake5″

Why: This breezy floaty sundress completely embodies those care-free childhood days of summer. Running barefoot in the park, dangling your toes off the edge of the dock, splashing in the ocean waves – all you needed was your trusty sundress and you were good to go. And with the loose fitting cut of the Ella dress, this one is to be a favorite for many summers to come as a maxi, a mini and a tunic…

So refreshing to see high quality, classic, well-designed organic clothing for young girls that has style and is free of bumper sticker slogans. The design and the eco-friendly manufacturing process is message enough. The Ella dress is handmade in the USA using 100% organic cotton voile lined with natural linen dyed with low-impact, plant based dyes. Even the button at the nape of the dress is made from recycled materials.

Studying children’s fashion is not the norm a Parson’s School of Fashion Design, but designer Sarah Waldo could not ignore her passion. She became the first student at Parson’s to persue a focus children’s fashion and is now in the second season of her eponymous line. Designed specifically with the mini-ecofashionista in mind, the line combines quality tayloring and design with environmentally and socially responsible practices. Based out of Providence, RI, the collection is hand sewn in fair-wage, fair-benefit factories in nearby Fall River, MA using only organic and natural fiber fabrics dyed with low impact dyes.
