Nanimarquina Digit Rug ICFF 2011

Friday, May 27th, 2011

Who: Nanimarquina – Barcelona, Spain

What: Digit Rug

Where: Spacify – $3909.11

Why We Love It: Designed by graphic artist Cristian Zuzunaga, this bright graphic rug reads like an optical illusion (see also the more muted, monochromatic version). Change your perspective, your proximity or the light of day and you’ll notice different patterns jumping out at you, different groupings of pixels rising to the forefront. It’s really very cool. Cristian has used this same technique of ‘decomposition of color through pixels’ to design sofas, pillows, bedding, wallpaper, scarves, too, and now he can add rugs to the list.

Working with Nanimarquina, a renowned Spanish rug manufacturer devoted to promoting sustainable ethics in production, design and fair labor practices. Many of the rugs are biodegradable and masterly handcrafted using traditional techniques in their Fair Trade facilities in India. The Digit rug is made from hand-knotted wool sourced from New Zealand.

IMAKE Studios Dreamweave Ottoman

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011

Who: IMAKE Studios – Brooklyn, NY

What: Dreamweave Ottoman

Where: IMAKE Studios – $1200 -$2400, available in 3 sizes.

Why We Love It: Perhaps it was because we had been on our feet all day at the Architectural Digest Home Show, but more likely we were mesmerized by the intoxicating fabrics and shape of the ottomans, but it felt like we were sitting on a cloud.

Upholstered in 100% silk handwoven by women in the villages of the Northeastern State of Assam in India, the Pure Eri III Fabric is our absolute favorite. It is so soft it feels like it could melt in your hands; the texture is so rich with the relaxed weave of a linen and the varied color of natural fibers. The effect is a luxe but loose fabric with movement and lustre; celebrating the natural beauty of silk.

The silk worms who spin these silks are considered ‘wild,’ meaning that the worms live outside not in a mill, and because of this the silk is much stronger and more durable then domesticated mulberry silk.

The ottoman itself has smooth, languid curves, that draw you in with their gentle slope drooping gradually towards the ground. The shape is based on the forms of an Indian percussion instrument called the Tabla.

Rapanui’s Eco Surf Wear Organic Tees

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

Who: Rapanui – Isle of Wight, UK

What: MCS Organic T-shirt

Where: Rapanui – £24.95 (approx. $37USD), in blue or charcoal

Why We Love It: We were psyched to learn about Rapanui, an eco-surf wear company founded in 2008 by brothers Rob and Martin Drake-Knight.  We love their graphic designs, like this MCS t-shirt with a collection of marine animals swimming in unison to create silhouettes of sharks; we love that 50% of the proceeds of the sale of this t-shirt is donated to the Marine Conservation Society; but most of all we applaud the brothers for their transparency and for the role models they have become in transforming the clothing industry and the way that consumers think about clothing.

Seriously considering a complete rework of the living room to incorporate these colors, so lovely together and calming with a bit of red to keep it lively. Click to continue »

Nautical Rope Knot Doorstop

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

knot_door_stopperWho: Two’s Company - Elmsford, NY

What: Bar Harbor Knot Door Stopper

Where: Two’s Company – $55 in navy; also available in natural at  Uncommon Goods – $40

Why We Love ‘Em: Must be because it is still the middle of winter up here that we have been even more obsessed with all things nautical. Now if only we had a door that needed propping against a warm ocean breeze, this navy knot would definitely be our stopper of choice. The natural jute fibers are rugged enough for indoor or outdoor use and the 3lb weight of the hefty knot easily anchors the heaviest of doors. Of course, living in a city, we don’t have many doors that need propping, so we’ll be using ours as a bookend. Click to continue »

Where: Velocity; Now on sale for 20% off,  from $251-$1259
