Who: PlanToys; Palo Alto, CA
What: Green Dollhouse
Where: Amazon.com – $218.08 w/furniture & free shipping
Why: Goodbye plastic Malibu Barbie Dream House, hello eco-dream home! PlanToys modern masterpiece comes complete with solar panels, a wind turbine, a passive solar shade, a rain barrel, a recycling center, and furniture made of recycled, natural rubber wood dyed with vegetable and soy dyes. The perfect platform for teaching your children about the beauty of green living.
The dollhouse itself is made from rubber wood that has essentially been ‘retired’. A rubber tree can only be tapped for latex for about 25 years before it becomes uneconomical to harvest and the trees are burned down and a new tree was planted in its place. PlanToys salvages these “retired” trees and uses them for the raw material for their toys.
The PlanToys factory in Thailand is powered by solar energy and biomass, burning the scrap wood pieces from production. The manufacturing process is designed specifically to reduce waste and conserve energy.
Here are a couple of our other mod-eco favs:
The Modularean Eco House by David Baker + Partners, that was designed specifically as a fundraiser for the Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation. So, sadly, you can no longer purchase this incredibly hip pre-fab eco- house.
The Solar Powered Bamboo Dollhouse that comes complete with fully function solar panels that power the homes LED lights providing an energy efficient light source for your dolls, honestly, love it! And the house itself is made of rapidly renewable bamboo. Price tag? $499.95……. or
Plan Toys Contemporary Eco-friendly Doll House – $ 120.00
