BottleStone Kitchen Countertops Guide
Eco-friendliness: 80% recycled content; no VOCs
BottleStone is a relative new comer on the eco-friendly countertop scene. It is a composite of ceramic and post-consumer recycled glass. The glass used is salvaged from curbside recycling centers in the San Francisco Bay area not far from the manufacturing plant. The manufacturing process makes it possible to use fluorescent lightbulbs, glass containers, window and door panels without even having to wash the material first which conserves water and reduces waste. Once collected the glass is crushed into small pieces and mixed in with a combination of clay and cement which is then fired in a giant kiln. Finally it is finished with a sealer to make it even more resistant to stains.
The final product is incredibly strong, durable and versatile. Bottlestone countertops are similar in style and appearance to IceStone Countertops, one of the main differences between the two being that BottleStone countertops contain 80% post-consumer recycled glass for an even more eco-friendly countertop option. Like stone slabs, BottleStone countertops have an high level of heat, stain and scratch resistance. In most cases it is as hard or harder than granite or marble and is installed using the same methods that are used for natural stone installations.
BottleStone Countertops are available in standard slab sizes of 30″x48″x1″ thick to minimize waste in projects as this size suits standard design projects. In addition, the countertops can be customized to suit your project. So if you wanted to use wine bottles you’ve collected over the years, that could be incorporated into the design.
Some additional green attributes to this product are that at the end of its lifecycle, old BottleStone countertops can be recycled into new BottleStone simply by crushing down to sizes that can be reused. In addition the carbon footprint of this product compare to a concrete or granite is much lower since it uses less energy to create – in the case of concrete, 42% less. .
BottleStone countertops are a great eco-friendly option for your green kitchen renovation and can be used for both residential or commercial projects as backsplashes, bathroom vanities, table tops, bar tops, outdoor bbq tops, fireplace hearths, patio table tops, flooring or even passive-solar building cladding. Use of BottleStone materials in your green building project may qualify for LEED certified points. Projects within the LEED 500 mile radius of Aromas, CA range from Medford, OR to Las Vegas, NV.
