For filler they use fine flake aluminum scraps salvaged from nearby milling operations that are embedded into a clear low-VOC polyester-based composite sealing the shavings into the resin while leaving visible the curves, coils and edges of the shavings for a visually stimulating finish. These aluminum scraps would otherwise be burned releasing harmful toxins into the environment, in this way these waste materials are being reused in an environmentally friendly way.
This eco-friendly countertop option is available in a Textured, Classic or Honed surface treatment in a satin or hi-gloss finish. ALKEMI countertops are available in a variety of colors to complement your modern green project. By coloring the resin they can create opaque reds and purples to brilliant silvers, coppers and golds. Custom orders are available for bulk purchases.
ALKEMI countertop slabs are available in standard sheet sizes of 36″x120′ and 36″x96′ in thicknesses of 1/2″ and 3/4″. It is a heat resistant, stain resistant, scratch and non-absorbent surface material and can be sanded down should to repair minor nics, scratches and stains. It can be used for wall and surface applications, but not for flooring.
ALKEMI Countertops are certified by Scientific Certifications Systems (SCS) confirming that ALKEMI countertops contain 34% post-industrial scrap materials by weight (by volume it is 60%). ALKEMI countertops also qualify for Recycled Content LEED certification for use of renewable resources, use of recycled materials, end reuse (surfaces can be recycled by Renewed Materials and reused as samples or ground down into new countertops), locally extracted materials (the post-industrial scrap is salvaged near the manufacturing plant) and Low-VOCs.
