Chair Reupholstery 101 V.3 (Mild Freakout)

Written by Urban Sherp on May 25th, 2010

Okay, so yes am totally freaking out right now after the arduous task of picking out my fabric (and am now having total second thoughts) to figuring out how to finish the newly sanded wood – wanted that beachy driftwood feel to tone down the boldness of the fabric, but now thinking they totally clash. Love how the grey linseed oil looks on the wood  for that unfinished finished look (although it shows a lot of the imperfections on in the details where the original stain was not completely sand out – will that drive me crazy???), but now can’t decide if it works with the fabric. So do I buy new fabric or do I just paint the wood?? Ahhhh, and now time is running out, class number 5 is tonight!

Continuing cost breakdown:

Fabric – $17.95/yard – total of 8 yards (regular $95/yard at Crate & Barrel -also somewhat annoyed that I found out after the fact that they are selling this fabric at Crate & Barrel… bygones)

Curved Upholstery needle – $2.30

1″ Foam – $16.95

Time spent agonizing over final decision – still counting….

Thanks for sharing your experience. Just signed up for the eliot class. I’m looking for eco materials – where did you end up finding your foam, batting, etc. Also, is Fabric #2 from Crate & Barrel? Loved how fabric #1 worked out but love your second choice too. Thanks for your time and help!

They do have the second fabric, a print by Thomas Paul at Crate & Barrel – but don’t buy it there! It’s about $90/yard there. You can get it at Zimman’s in Lynn for $24/yard I think. Crate & Barrel has a crazy mark up. Mitchell + Gold is using this print too. And once I found it, now I see it everywhere. If Zimman’s is too far you can also get it at Calico Corner’s, online or in stores for less. I got real cotton batting, not chemical based batting at Zimman’s too – you have to ask for it, they keep it in the back. There are organic options online, but I ran out of time. The foam is a bit more of a challenge to find green, most foam is TOXIC. There is a furniture company in Watertown that uses an eco-foam, but I wasn’t able to track down any solid options online given my time constraints.

Definitely keep me posted how the class works out for you – have you settled on a fabric??
