Urban Knitters Woven Graffiti

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

Knitting is hip again and the latest evidence of that are popping up in cities around the world (Mexico, Australia, US… ) as knitters envelope bike racks, fences, trees and buses in whimsical knitted creations. Call it ‘yarn bombing,’ ‘guerilla art,’ or ‘street art,’ but groups of knitters are taking to the streets joining the latest global phenomenon of knitting street artists, and it’s sweet and beautiful and cities are embracing this form of expression. I caught my first sighting recently in Somerville, MA and was delighted and fascinated. How do they do it??

DIY Chevron Curtains

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

Still suffering from my obsession with chevron, and likely will be until I’ve got something chevron in the house. But finding just the right one has always been a challenge (ask my brothers about my tendency to only so slightly over-research…. ). That’s why I love this DIY project from Green Your Decor. A simple DIY chevron curtain.

Simple materials (duck cloth, measuring tape, painters tape, paint brush and low-VOC paint), simple instructions (measure – okay this may be the complicated part…, tape, paint) and you can customize to suit, thick stripes, thin stripes, multi-stripes. Of course this well take a little calculating.
Definitely a fun summer project!

Zero Energy Design’s ‘Green esCAPE’ Kids Playhouse

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

Now this is the kind of playhouse I’d want in my back yard! ZeroEnergy Design just completed this ingenious playhouse to be installed in the Cape Cod Mall in Hyannis MA and raffled off on August 12 (Buy Tickets). The project was designed for the Project Playhouse fundraiser for the children’s programs of Housing Assistance Corporation (HAC), non-profit organization that provides affordable-housing services and solutions to families in need.

ZeroEnergy is a leader in LEED certified sustainable modern green architecture and mechanical design and have designed some seriously amazing homes all over the New England area.

In true ZeroEnergy style, the playhouse is green by design and has all sorts of kid-friendly features like a chalk board wall, a toy storage bin that also can be accessed from the outside, a loft with a telescope, a climbing wall, and a built-in lounge chair that slides across the deck where kids, and adults can unwind.

And now’s your chance to win a little piece of ZeroEnergy magic while supporting a good cause. I am kid-free and have a backyard the size of a postage stamp, but would love to win this playhouse! Perhaps the Sherp’s new backyard office….

The Wilsonart metaproject 01 Challenge at ICFF

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

This year for the Wilsonart challenge, twenty Industrial Design Students from the RIT School of Design were presented with the challenge of creating seating prototypes using Wilsonart International’s laminate surfacing materials. A twist on this year’s competition was that the students were asked to provide a utilitarian service beyond seating and incorporate that into their design. You know we love a multi-functional piece, so we were particularly interested to see what the students came up. From The Cooler Bench with built in water cooler by Andy Clark to a collaborative hub for people to gather (The Hub by Brian Madden) to a companion seat with pet house underneath (The Companion by Richard Laustrup) to the Tool Stool by Tiffany Hwang to the Nodule by Francesca Pezze designed to ease the process of personal grooming, each seating prototype features dual uses.

The winner of this year’s challenge was The Trance by Dan Fritz, a chair designed using hexagonal shapes to create a meditative retreat. Featured below are the winner and three runner’s up.

Spring DIY Projects Big & Small

Saturday, April 30th, 2011

Finally feels like spring here in Cambridge. Sun is out, lilacs are blooming, trees are greening. All very exciting and has us wanting to get out and do something with our hands.
Here are a couple of fun spring projects – one that takes no time and minimal supplies and the other, well the other is going to take a lot of motivation, and possibly approval from the Cambridge Historic Trust…..

1) The Firefly Candles, courtesy of the Fabulous Beekman Boys, adds a little sweet simplicity and innocence to your backyard fete or front porch respite… All you need are some votive candles, glass canning jars and some fishing wire.

2) Front Slat Fence, courtesy of The Brick House blog. We say fences like these all over California and have been pining for one ever since. Just trying to figure out how that would work with a Victorian…. Still want one and the sail canopy too! Here’s the DIY for the slat screen, swoon….
