The Highly Efficient Haiku Fan

Thursday, April 12th, 2012

Who: Big Ass Fans/Haiku – Lexington, KY

What: Haiku Fan

Where: Haiku – Available for pre-order.

Why We Love It: Exciting news!! Big Ass Fans has unveiled a smaller ass fan specifically for residential use! We have long been–er–fans of their monster commercial models, so we were psyched to see them bring the same technology, innovation, efficiency, and coolness to fans for the home.

Combining a modern look (elegantly curved minimalist blades of bamboo) and unparalleled performance (a near silent motor with the highest rating on the ENERGY STAR charts) the Haiku fan is a smart choice for any homeowner who wants to look cool and save on cooling costs. Available in caramel or cocoa bamboo.

Limited Edition Java Tote

Wednesday, April 11th, 2012

Who: Brooklyn Industries – Brooklyn, NY

What: Java Tote

Where: Brooklyn Industries – $124-134 (Bonus: click here for 5% off all full priced merchandise!)

Why We Love It: As the saying goes, waste not, want not, and Brooklyn Industries’ head designer, Nancy Phan has certainly taken that to heart. After a visit to the Brooklyn Roasting Company, she found inspiration in a stack of discarded jute coffee bags. The resulting totes are a far cry from the shapeless sack they once were thanks to details like the contrasting cotton lining, the genuine leather trim, and the sturdy leather base. And because each tote is made from salvaged materials, no two are alike, so you just don’t know what you are going to get. You could wind up with a bag that once carried beans from Bali, Brazil, Mexico, Ethiopia, or Peru. You can, however, specify the lining color–choose from black, pink, or blue.

But hurry, these totes are limited edition, so get them while you can! And you can feel good about your purchase–a portion of the profits from each tote will go to Kiva a micro-lending organization that helps fund projects around the world to combat poverty.

Pong’s Anti Radiation Cell Phone Covers

Monday, April 9th, 2012

Who: Pong Research – Leesburg, VA

What: Pong Case

Where: Pong Research – $49.99

Why We Love It: We love our smartphones! Love emailing on the go, playing words with friends, checking facebook, and taking videos of the kiddos. What don’t we love? Stressing about the radiation we are absorbing while using our phones.

Happily, Pong Research has created covers that redirect your phone’s radiation (up to 95% of it). How, you ask? All cell phones emit radiation… and it’s the Near Field Intensity (NFI) radiation that has the scientific community alarmed. The long term dangers that NFI poses to humans are unclear. Pong’s smartphone covers pull the radiation away from the user, minimizing the user’s exposure and risk. All that, and the covers are available in some pretty inspiring colors – how can you beat that?

Scooters for Grown-ups

Thursday, April 5th, 2012

Who: Reform School – Los Angeles, CA

What: Amish Made Scooters

Where: Reform School – $265

Why We Love It: Nothing like a scooter to make you feel like a kid again. Of course this one is a bit more grown-up with full size tires, a welded steel frame, a handy kickstand, and even has real-live, not-of-the-foot-variety brakes so you won’t scuff your ballet flats when cruising to a stop. It comes in three sizes fitting 3 footers to 6 footers, so you can find one that is just right. Plus, it’s got the requisite bike basket for toting goodies to and fro.

But, perhaps what we love most about these fancy scooters (in black, orange, or blue) is that they are manufactured in the US on an Amish farm. What could be more charming than that? Side note, if you happen upon the Silverlake neighborhood of L.A., we definitely recommend a visit to the Reform School, they’ve got all sorts of treasures to discover.

Icelandic-Inspired Agate Earrings

Sunday, April 1st, 2012

Who: Melissa Joy Manning – Berkely, CA

What: Occo Agate Post Earrings

Where: MJM – $165

Why We Love It: It was love at first sight when we laid eyes on these agate earrings–sparkly mini-geodes for your ears! Inspired by a recent visit to Iceland, you can feel the dynamic beauty of the landscape captured in this organic design. And what girl wouldn’t appreciate the fact that no two stones are alike, so each pair is unlike any other, sure to become an heirloom piece.

Of course, we appreciate that each piece of MJM jewelry is handcrafted in their Berkely studio from 100% recycled silver and gold using traditional metalsmithing techniques resulting in less waste than traditional methods. Any metal scraps generated from the creation process are returned to the refinery to be recycled anew! The stones themselves are consciously sourced from reputable companies throughout the US and abroad in search for people and planet sensitive stones.

Citizen Folding Bikes

Monday, March 26th, 2012

Who: Citizen Bikes

What: MIAMI Folding Bike

Where: Citizen bikes – $199

Why We Love It: This is the time of year when being a biker is bliss (and when our mechanic scolds us for not driving enough–oops), birds chirping, blue skies, warm breezes–it’s no time to be sitting in traffic. Particularly handy for city-dwellers, commuters, and frequent travelers are Citizen’s collection of folding bikes–all on sale for spring! And not to choose fashion over function, but the Miami is available in some pretty sweet colors–flamingo, olive, sky blue–so you can ride in style.

But it’s not just all looks, it has the function elements too featuring a Shimano 6-speed index gear system with grip shifter and steel fenders. Plus, it folds easily so you can stow it in your trunk, take it on the bus, or tuck it into an entry way for those of us who are storage space challenged. It’s small frame can also support accessories, so consider adding one of their $7 carrier racks for quick trips to the market. So, go ahead hop on for a carbon-free commute!

Why We Love It: It feels like summer here in Boston so we have got bbqs on the brain! This hot compact hibachi-style grill is perfect for those of us who enjoy a moveable feast. It’s designed with portability in mind so you can take the sweet taste of the grill to the beach, the park, or your own backyard. Winner of 7 design awards, it features an all-natural porcelain base with stainless steel inserts, and a teak trivet–all of which, save for the trivet, are dishwasher-safe!! Amazing, right? Terra Keramik Espresso Cup

One & Co’s 47 Table

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

Who: One & Co for Council – New York, NY

What: 47 Table

Where: Design Within Reach – $1200

Why We Love It: Amazing what a little silver sheen can do to a block of wood. Whether clustered or solo, these metallic blocks elevate the room and are just plain cool–not sure if they are $1200 cool–but we love them nonetheless. The reflective finish adds luster to a room without feeling cold thanks to the warmth and natural imperfections of the wood. And the-ahem-silver lining? These stools/coffee tables happen to be quite green too.

The stools are cut from a decades-old douglas fir reclaimed from neglected buildings. They are coated with a low-VOC process to give it that unique shine that almost feels burned into the wood it’s so impeccably applied. The process One & Co uses avoids the toxic runoff associated with conventional silver plating techniques which is good for people and the planet. Plus, it’s all made in U.S.A.

Introducing TOMS Ballet Flats!

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

Who: TOMS – Los Angeles, CA

What: TOMS Ballet Flats

Where: TOMS – $74-$84, plus get $5 off with coupon code ShareToms

Why We Love It: We are super, super excited about the arrival of TOMS Shoes new ballet flats. They are perfect for spring temps whether at play or at the office, you can wear them with anything. We are partial to this two-tone burlap and canvas version–it’s got that extra touch of something different–but the solids are great too, and oh, so versatile. And of course, they all feature the signature blue TOMS logo telling the world that you are a part of One for One–helping to bring shoes to those in need.

But be warned, these flats are not very comfortable for those of us with wide feet–still too tight around the top and painful after a week of wear with absolutely no give–bummer! Alas, the narrow-footed will likely enjoy the snug fit and the cushy comfort of EVA foam and latex insert that will make it feel like you are walking in sneakers without looking like it. Also, they tend to run large, so if you are between sizes, order a size down.

Their ballet flats are manufactured in China, where according to TOMS, they “require factories to operate under sound labor conditions, pay fair wages and follow the International Labor Standards set by the International Labor Organization.”
