Why: Was thrilled to learn that two of my favorite green companies, Paperstone and Preserve, had joined forces to create a very sleek, very cool cutting board. The slate-like boards are made from the same 100% FSC certified post-consumer recycled paper that Paperstone uses for its countertops. The boards are coated with a non-porous petroleum free coating to protect the surface from sharp knives and to make them dishwasher safe for easy clean-up. And as with all Preserve products, once the boards have fulfilled their usefulness, they can be recycled anew.
Founded in 1996, Preserve has been a leader in green product design. Best known for their recycled toothbrushes, their product line has grown immensely with products are “green to the core” in accordance to their high eco-standards:
- eco-friendly/recycled materials for products & packaging
- free of toxic & harmful chemicals
- no animal testing
- made in the usa
- clean energy & energy reduction (office powered by wind and energy credits purchased from American Wind)
- support environmental research & development (esp in plastics)
- support non-profits
And something not on their list is their committment to the entire recycling process. They estimate that they have salvaged close to 100 tons of recycled plastic over the years. They have partnered with Stonyfield Farms and Organic Valley to give new life to plastic yogurt containers. They also have established recycling centers for the collection of Brita filters and their own products to complete the cycle.
