Mel en Stel’s Modern Tie Dye Dress

Friday, February 26th, 2010

mel_en_stel_tie_dye_dressWho: Mel en Stel – Brooklyn, NY

What: Sundress Silk/Cotton

Where: Mel en Stel – $300 SOLD OUT

Why We Love ‘Em: The last 10 days of blah rain have really got us pining for spring – pining for color, single layers, strappy sandals and this floaty spring dress from Mel en Stel. It takes the hippie out of tie dye and transforms it into an elegant and rich fabric – it almost looks more like a block print than a tie dye. Love the contrast of the blue and white tie dye with the bold red straps.

The New DIY Sites Where You Get to Design-It-Yourself

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

DIY_Fabric_Fonts_ArtI often consider Urban Sherp my very own file cabinet full of ideas, stores, designers and products that inspire me and whose eco and ethical design standards I admire. I’ve been incredibly inspired by the designers, store owners and crafters and their stories of how they brought their visions to life. It is hard to not get bitten by their creative drive which is why for the last few months I have been working with my dad building a piece of furniture. Click to continue »

Nautical Rope Knot Doorstop

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

knot_door_stopperWho: Two’s Company - Elmsford, NY

What: Bar Harbor Knot Door Stopper

Where: Two’s Company – $55 in navy; also available in natural at  Uncommon Goods – $40

Why We Love ‘Em: Must be because it is still the middle of winter up here that we have been even more obsessed with all things nautical. Now if only we had a door that needed propping against a warm ocean breeze, this navy knot would definitely be our stopper of choice. The natural jute fibers are rugged enough for indoor or outdoor use and the 3lb weight of the hefty knot easily anchors the heaviest of doors. Of course, living in a city, we don’t have many doors that need propping, so we’ll be using ours as a bookend. Click to continue »

Experiencing the High Line First Hand

Friday, February 19th, 2010

High_Line_NYCI finally got a chance to visit the High Line Park in New York and it was more impressive than I had anticipated. On our last day in New York, my husband and I got up early to squeeze in a visit, and even on a brisk morning, it was magical. We felt completely transported, elevated above the hustle and bustle and honking of morning rush hour to float above it all in a peaceful oasis. Moms were out walking their babies, joggers were enjoying a run without dodging traffic, commuters chose to take the scenic route, workers were laying the foundation for the next segment of the High Line, and my husband and were soaking it all in. What: Kafu Coffee Table

Where: Etsy – $1300

Why: This is the coffee table we have been looking for! One where we can neatly stow away our inevitable stack of magazines while still keeping them within arm’s reach. One that’s a sleek mix of modern materials with the thick 100% wool felt (by none other than FilzFelt) set against the smooth finish of the formaldehyde-free sustainable plywood.

Such an innovative design with great interplay of space, great curves, and great functionality. You can display the magazines vertically exposing the titles or on their sides for a more streamlined look.
